— APPROACH
Nothing moves on my stage just because it has to. Every cross, every entrance and every exit has to earn its place in the story. If a character leaves only because the scene is over, I haven’t finished directing it.
I write plays and lyrics as well as direct, so I read a script the way a musician reads a score: where the breath falls, where a line should give way to a gesture. When a moment can be played instead of said, I cut the words. In Neverland Never Ends, Wendy’s final answer is silent.
My work moves between Seoul and New York, between Korean classics and new American musicals, between immersive rooms and the proscenium. I don’t treat those as separate lanes. There are no boundaries in art is the rule I work by, not a slogan.
In rehearsal I keep every option open until we’ve seen it on its feet, and then I commit all the way.
— WHAT I BRING TO A PRODUCTION
Scale and new work. Resident Associate Directing Team on Moulin Rouge! The Musical in Korea, keeping a Broadway-scale staging accurate night after night — and original musicals directed from first draft in both cities.
Two languages, one room. I work in Korean and English and translate scripts, so I can connect creative teams across a licensed or international production.
A producer’s eye. General Manager and Director of The Wolves, running schedule and budget myself. I build my own blocking sheets, cue sheets and production bible.
A writer in the room. Playwright and K-pop lyricist; I give notes at the level of the line and the lyric.
— BIOGRAPHY
Sujin Moon is a director, writer and lyricist working between New York and Seoul. Her work grows out of one conviction — “There are no boundaries in art” — and moves across musicals, immersive theatre, contemporary dance and lyric writing.
Her original musical Neverland Never Ends, a Peter Pan story set in the First World War, has been staged three times in New York and earned her Most Compelling Emerging Director at the New York Theater Festival. Her audience-participation piece A Flame Sonata was selected for the Korea Emerging Directors Festival, and her chamber musical TONY, about Antoinette Perry, was chosen for Into the Creation 2025.
She worked on the Resident Associate Directing Team of Moulin Rouge! The Musical in Korea, assistant directed Sam-Mae-Kyung at the National Theater Company of Korea and Here’s to Life at La MaMa, and directed and general-managed the new musical showcase The Wolves (2026).
She holds an M.A. in Performance Studies from NYU Tisch and an M.Ed. in Theatre Education, taught theatre in Seoul public schools from 2020 to 2023, and is an Associate Member of SDC. Whatever the form, her work keeps asking the same questions: what gives people hope, who they are, and who gets to belong.
